Chapter 5

We did as Elias had instructed by sending a message runner throughout the court, and a day later, we flew from the city toward Achaea and its nearby territories. Not only would the lords be coming from the direction of their conquered territories, but using magic we were able to locate them. The Dalac could not be allowed to reach Lucenskath. Night fell and we made camp, continuing our flight the following day. Near midday, in the distance, I saw the dark form of the Dalac and their army on the horizon. I felt uneasy. The Dalac had been battling much as of late with their surrounding lords and territories and, though tired, would be far more battle ready than us.

Yet on the flip side, we were trained. I learned that the others had developed themselves, sparring, and keeping their skills fine-tuned.

I brushed my uncertainties aside, breathing slowly. As we approached the others, both of our groups stilled. The Dalac lords weren’t difficult to distinguish from their army. They each wore a dark insignia against their armor, a serpent’s fang crossed with a dagger behind it.

Their faces scrunched, their eyes questioning. Good. It appeared they hadn’t known we were coming. “Lords of the Dalac. We are here to put an end to your treasonous march. Surrender peacefully, and we’ll settle this without blood-shed,” Gabriel said.

I couldn’t help searching the faces present for Lucas, but I didn’t see him.

One of the lords stepped forward, raising an arm. His lips curled into a snarl. “We will never surrender!” he barked. He turned toward the others around him, “Attack!”

We didn’t wait for them to arrive. The shouts of battle cries were deafening as we rushed forward to meet them.

Some took to the skies while others chose to fight on the ground. Weapons clashed, the sound of metal colliding filled the air and cries of pain followed in turn.

I couldn’t help scouring the faces of the enemy for Lucas, but I didn’t spot him.

I ran straight for one of the lords. He was skilled, but no match for me. He attacked and I parried, slicing into his side with a wind-blade I summoned from my topaz. Lucas may have abandoned me, but I had no qualms about tapping into his magic.

I tried to drive the lord away from the others. He lunged relentlessly at me, a lust for blood evident in his eyes. His sword swung wide and his strikes were wild and random. He tried to summon dark chains from our shadows to restrain me, but I caused the shadows to shift as I summoned flames around me.

With another parry, I slammed my elbow into his wrist, breaking his grip on his sword and flinging it from his grasp. I shoved a ball of flame into his gut, and whipped my fire-wheel forward until one of the curved blades was a breath away from his neck. “It’s over,” I told him.

He was panting, breathless as he surrendered.

I looked around and saw that the other members of the Council had managed to do the same as I and subdued the other lords.
